“Screens shall not be installed at the duct termination.” - Dryer Termination Code
While most home improvement stores sell screens for dryer vents, and many builders and contractors install them in homes, code states that screens are not to be used. This picture from one of our jobs this week is a clear indicator as to why.
When lint accumulates it blocks the flow coming from your dryer, reducing your dryer’s efficiency and increasing your chances of fire.
Having the proper venting along with annual maintenance is extremely important.

Last year we called one of our customers for their annual service. She told us that she didn’t think she could afford it this year and was going to have to pass. This is a customer we have taken care of for years and we told her not to worry about the bill, we would do the service for no charge.
After we did the job, she insisted on paying something and gave us half the amount of the service cost. This was more than sufficient as we insisted we were happy to take care of her. We wanted her to feel comfortable and safe with using her unit.
This year we received this card in the mail along with a check for the remaining half.
Our company policy is to treat our customers as friends and family. We talk to them about their lives, about their families. We help them with whatever we can. We tell them if they ever need anything they can call us, even if it’s not chimney related. We create personal relationships with our customers and we are rewarded for it.
It’s a simple lesson- do good things, good things happen.
WE FIX LEAKY CHIMNEYS
The # 1 threat to a masonry chimney is water. If left untreated, massive repairs to the chimney AND your home interior will cost you MUCH more than simple chimney maintenance.
Don’t let the intense rain of the summer cause you any devastation this fall or winter. Call Stoker’s today to take care of your system and protect your home.
The difference in a contractor and a chimney technician.
While the initial cost of chimney work can be significantly lower when using a builder or handyman, the long term savings of using an actual chimney professional outweigh the high initial expense when you account for knowledge, quality workmanship, and premium materials.
It’s service season, and a major benefit to having your chimney and venting systems inspected is to catch and fix minor problems before they become major repairs.
We were able to save this chase cover because the rust was caught early, saving the customer hundreds, or potentially thousands, of dollars in future repairs.
Even if you don’t use your system, it’s always recommended to have a chimney professional out for an annual inspection to save yourself from water damage and structural problems down the line.
Lovely weather for busting tiles
When clay tiles are damaged or undersized, we often have to remove them to install a new liner system. We do this by attaching a metal plate to the end of rods on a half-horse drill and breaking the tile. We clean out the broken tile from the bottom and then move on to the next one.
Depending on the condition of the tiles and how they were laid, the length and state of the chimney, the location of cleanout access and, of course, weather conditions, this can be anywhere from an hour job to a full day job.
DO NOT USE FOIL FLEX
It’s amazing how many homes we go to with improper dryer venting. Foil flex venting is extremely common, even with dryers that have been professionally installed. However, they are not to be used and can potentially be a FIRE HAZARD.
Please make sure you have proper venting before using any appliance.
When installing a unit into an exterior fireplace, we often wrap the firebox with ceramic insulation to prevent heat loss, pushing all the heat generated by the unit into the home rather than escaping. It also prevents cold outside air from coming in. This helps with the performance of the unit and improves efficiency.
With a simple dryer vent cleaning, we increased the airflow by nearly 1,000 feet per minute, and increased the temperature by nearly 12 degrees.
This both improves drying times and increases the lifespan of the dryer.
The Chimney Safety Institute of America recommends having your dryer vent serviced and inspected annually.
Benefits of an insulated liner system and damper block off plates:
When installing a new unit with a liner system, we wrap our liners with a 1/2” ceramic insulation. This allows the flue gasses to stay warmer longer so they can evacuate the system more efficiently, leading to less creosote buildup and back-puffing issues. It also provides a zero-clearance to combustibles, meaning if your existing chimney was built improper, it won’t allow heat to transfer to any building material.
We also use metal and ceramic insulation to block of the damper opening, so that no heat from the unit is lost by going up the chimney cavity. All heat is pushed back into the room, giving you optimum efficiency.
